Are Social Security Offices Open Today? List of Closures by State

14 hours ago 1

Ahead of Thursday's National Day of Mourning for the late President Jimmy Carter, some Social Security offices will be closed today, January 8.

Why It Matters

When Social Security offices are closed, Americans cannot get their questions and issues resolved regarding their benefit payments.

More than 65 million Americans receive Social Security, including a substantial number of retirees who depend on the monthly income for their necessities.

What To Know

The National Day of Mourning for the 39th president, Jimmy Carter, will be held on January 9. Carter died last month at the age of 99.

On Wednesday, January 8, several local Social Security offices have closed for the day.

This includes the Madison, Indiana office. According to the Social Security website, the office can only provide assistance by telephone.

Meanwhile, in Maysville, Kentucky, residents will have the same problem, as all in-person services are suspended, and beneficiaries have to rely on phone service.

The St. Louis Southside location in Missouri is also only providing phone service until further notice. The same applies to the Toms River, New Jersey; Roswell, New Mexico; and West Nyack, New York locations.

Some Southern states are also facing Social Security office closures.

Clinton, South Carolina's office will only be available by telephone on Wednesday. And those in Kingsport, Tennessee, also will need to call in for help rather than going for in-person services.

The state of Virginia has two closures, one in Downtown and one in Richmond East.

Wyoming's Cody office will only offer telephone service from Wednesday, January 8, to Friday, January 10, and the Sheridan location is offering only telephone service until further notice.

What People Are Saying

The Social Security Administration, on its website: "Social Security offices, along with all federal agencies, will be closed on Thursday, January 9 for a National Day of Mourning to honor the memory of America's 39th President, Jimmy Carter. Please visit our online services page to learn what you can do online or contact Social Security by phone webpage to learn what services are available using our automated telephone services."

What Happens Next

While all Social Security offices will be closed on Thursday, January 9, due to the National Day of Mourning for former President Carter, most Social Security offices should be back up and running on Friday.

However, the Social Security Administration is currently facing a funding crisis that could threaten full payments by as early as 2035. At that point, analysts anticipate that the fund would only be enough to pay roughly 80 percent of what beneficiaries are owed.
