On Wednesday, the official Wicked social media accounts shared a clip of Ariana Grande’s rendition of the iconic song “Popular” ahead of the movie’s release.
If you didn’t know, Ariana stars as Glinda in the upcoming musical alongside Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba.
The clip features the lyrics of “Popular” over apparent scenes from the movie, which will be released in theaters on Nov. 22.
However, it wasn’t long before Ariana — a lifelong Wicked fan — hopped into the comments section to point out that the account had actually gotten one of the lines wrong.
The lyric in question was captioned by the Wicked account as, “I’ll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys.” However, Ariana commented that the actual lyric is “ploys” and not “poise.”
“it’s ‘ploys’ !!!!!! i love you @wickedmovie 🥲🥹,” Ari wrote.
Ariana’s comment sparked a huge commotion online as several longtime Wicked fans realized that they’d been singing the lyric wrong for years.
“THIS IS HOW I'M LEARNING IT ISN'T POISE??? IT'S PLOYS????” one person tweeted. “Isn’t it poise ??” another user questioned.
“I saw the original cast and all these years thought it was poise and today learned it was all a lie,” one person said. “Damn, I’ve been singing the wrong lyric for 20 years,” someone else confessed.
“i thought it was proper poise too,” another tweet read, while one more user questioned, “ITS NOT POISE????????????? what the fuck.”
Meanwhile, other fans weren’t as easily convinced and maintained that the lyric was, in fact, “poise.”
“Everyone taking her word as gospel when shes wrong ijbol why the hell would it be ploys,” one person wrote. “i can’t tell if yall are setting her up or not bc the official lyric is proper poise?????” someone else said.
Eventually, fans cross-checked the lyrics with those printed within the OG Wicked CD’s booklet and the lyrics from the original Broadway cast recording.
“Just took out my Wicked CD to check the lyrics in the booklet and y’all Ariana is right. It’s ploys,” someone tweeted.
