Aubrey Plaza previously lifted the lid on her marriage to her late husband Jeff Baena, just three months before his tragic death at the age of 47 on Friday.

Opening up during a September 2024 appearance on SiriusXM’s Howard Stern Show, Aubrey cheekily confessed “I would stay away [from dating actors],” when discussing how she had fallen head over heels for her director husband. “I’m married to a writer/director. I’ve never, like, really dated an actor [or] been with an actor for a long time.”

She added, “I think about that and I think, like, ‘Oh, God, I don’t want to be with myself’ or, ‘I don’t want to do that.’ But then, sometimes, I see there are so many actor couples and you’re, like, ‘Wow, look at them. They must really laugh it up.’”

Aubrey and Jeff tied the knot back in 2021 after dating for over a decade, but their marriage was tragically cut short on Friday January 3 when Jeff was found dead at home and pronounced dead at the scene.

Jeff was born and raised in Miami before he moved to New York to attend film school. He then began his career as a filmmaker in Los Angeles. His directorial debut was with Life After Beth, which he worked on with his wife.

When asked about writing and directing the movie, Baena said to Seensome in 2014: "It’s all I ever want to do; it felt really comfortable and fun. I’ve been a writer for twelve years now and it was always a means to an end, I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to be a director so this was always my intention and it felt right."

Jeff and Aubrey first started dating in 2011, with their relationship kept largely out of the spotlight until Plaza revealed in 2021 that she had tied the knot, by referring to Jeff as her “darling husband” in an Instagram post celebrating his latest movie. "So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to italia to cause some more trouble," her caption read.

Expanding further on exactly how their marriage had happened, Aubrey went on to reveal all while appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that same year.

“A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal,” Plaza recalled during a December 2021 appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up.”

She added at the time, “We were in the lockdown. Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day.”

Keen to keep things lowkey, the couple tied the knot at home, with Plaza telling Ellen: I created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature. Then the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase [to perform the ceremony]. … I can’t remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But I’m pretty sure it’s legal.”
