‘Back in Action’ Teaser: Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx Are the Comedic ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ as Married Former Spies

Cameron Diaz is back in action and acting again after a decade away from Hollywood.

The star reunites with her fellow “Annie” alum Jamie Foxx for Netflix action-comedy “Back in Action,” directed by Seth Gordon from a script he co-wrote with Brendan O’Brien (“Neighbors”). The film follows two former CIA spies who retire to start a family, but married couple Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx) soon find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown.

Andrew Scott, Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, and Rylan Jackson co-star.

Foxx is executive producing the film with Datari Turner, O’Brien, and Tim Lewis. Producers are Beau Bauman (“Central Intelligence”) for Good One Productions and Gordon via Exhibit A, along with Jenno Topping, Peter Chernin, and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett for Chernin Entertainment.

“Back in Action” is a turning point for both lead stars. Diaz announced her retirement in 2018 and has not appearing onscreen since “Annie” in 2014 with Foxx. The two had previously collaborated on “Any Given Sunday” with “Back in Action” marking their third film together.

Production on Netflix feature “Back in Action” was paused, however, as Foxx suffered from a “medical complication” in April 2023. The actor later took to Instagram to disclose more about his health struggle and thank his fans for supporting him.

“First of all, I want to say thank you to everybody that’s prayed, man, and sent me messages. I cannot even begin to tell you how far it took me and how it brought me back. I went through something that I thought I would never ever go through,” Foxx said. “I know a lot of people were waiting, wanting to hear updates. But, to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me like that, man. You know, I want you to see me laughing and having a good time, partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie or television show. I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was going to make it through. And to be honest with you, my sister, Deidra Dixon, and my daughter, Corinne Marie, saved my life. So to them, to God, to a lot of great medical people, I’m able to leave you this video.”

Foxx announced in July 2023 that he was returning to “Back in Action” after having gone “to hell and back” with his health.

“My road to recovery had some potholes. But I’m coming back and I’m able to work,” Foxx said. “So I want to thank the people who let me work. I just want to say that I love everybody and I love all the love that I got. If you see me out from now on and every once in a while I just burst into tears it’s because it’s been tough, man. I was sick, man. But now I’ve got my legs underneath, so you’re going to see me out.”

“Back in Action” premieres January 17 on Netflix. Check out the teaser below.
