Bad Bunny Shows Support for Kamala Harris After Comedian Calls Puerto Rico a ‘Floating Island of Garbage’ at Trump Rally

Bad Bunny has endorsed Kamala Harris after telling his 46 million Instagram followers to vote for the Vice President.

On Sunday, the Puerto Rican superstar took to IG to repost a video of the Democratic presidential nominee’s plans for Benito’s home country, sharing the video four times.

“I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and a competent leader,” Harris says in the clip. “He abandoned the island, tried to block aid after back-to-back devastating hurricanes, and offered nothing more than paper towels and insults.”

According to CNN, Harris is referring to 2017 when, after Hurricane Irma and Maria—which caused major power outages on the island—Trump was denounced for tossing supplies, like paper towels, to the island’s residents.

Harris and Bad Bunny’s teams have reportedly been in conversation, with her hoping that he’ll back her plans for Puerto Rico. “This has been a thoughtful and deliberate approach focused on the issues,” a source told the outlet.

A representative for Bad Bunny told CNN that him resharing Harris’ IG reel is “not an endorsement,” but that he is “supporting” Harris. “Benito’s political focus has always been on Puerto Rico,” the rep added.

Benito's support comes after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a joke about Puerto Rico at Trump’s controversial Madison Square Garden rally. “There’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe told the crowd on Sunday.

Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez later jumped on a Twitch stream to reprimand Hinchcliffe for his joke, where Walz explained that “people in Puerto Rico are [American citizens]. They pay taxes and serve in the military at almost a higher rate than anybody else.”

“When you have some a-hole calling Puerto Rico ‘floating garbage,’ know that that's what they think about you,” AOC said, who is also Puerto Rican.

Hinchcliffe responded to Walz and Ocasio-Cortez on X, tweeting, “These people have no sense of humor. Wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his ‘busy schedule’ to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist. I love Puerto Rico and vacation there. I made fun of everyone…watch the whole set. I’m a comedian Tim…might be time to change your tampon.”

As Hinchcliffe himself pointed out, he made more racist jokes, including one about Black people “carving watermelons.”

Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin also shared Harris’ reel about her plans for Puerto Rico on their respective IG Stories.

Both Trump and Harris are trying to win over the Puerto Rican vote, particularly in Pennsylvania, a battleground state where around half a million Puerto Ricans live.
