BBC Antiques Roadshow expert's famous F1 star father many don't know about

Antiques Roadshow expert Mark Hill, who has been a regular on the BBC show since 2007, has a famous sports star father that many may not be aware of.

The Surrey-born star, who attended the Cranmore Preparatory School and Guildford's Royal Grammar School before moving on to the University of Reading where he studied History of Art and Architecture, is actually the son of Roger Hill.

Roger served as Chief Mechanic for the Tyrrell F1 Team, a racing team that enjoyed significant success in the 1970s, clinching three Drivers' Championships and one Constructors' Championship with driver Jackie Stewart.

The team's final Grand Prix victory was in Detroit in 1983, before retiring in 1998. It is now known as the Mercedes-AMG F1 team following several sales and rebrandings, the Express reports.

New Zealand native Roger, who moved to England in 1965, ten years prior to Mark's birth, was essentially Stewart's personal mechanic and always worked on his car.

He instilled in his son a love for craftsmanship and a curiosity about how things are made. Mark revealed to Essential Surrey that his first antique purchase was a pocket watch, which he later sold at Crow's Auction Gallery in Dorking, making a profit and sparking his interest in antiques.

He recalled: "I actually made a bit of money on it and I thought, 'Wow! This is good! '" Mark reminisced about his father's influence, saying: "Glass in particular spoke, or rather yelled, at me with its jewel-like colours and variety of forms and it soon became a personal and then professional passion."

He continued: "My father is a retired Formula One engineer and always taught me that to understand an object properly, you have to understand how it was made, and the often complex techniques required to create both in this mercurial medium added further appeal."
