The BBC has announced that troublesome duo Wallace & Gromit will return to our screens for a fun, festive, Christmas Day special.
Wallace & Gromit, which first came out back in 1989, centres on inventor Wallace, who lives in the North of England alongside his loyal dog Gromit. The unlikely best friends constantly find themselves in hilarious misadventures.
The classic comedy last put out a film on BBC 16 years ago, with the release A Matter of Loaf and Death. While the 2008 film was only a short watch, however, this year’s release, Vengeance Most Fowl, will be a full feature-length bonanza.
Despite the huge wait since Wallace & Gromit was last on TV, the BBC has got the old team back together to make sure the new movie will still have the laughs, animation, and crazy plots that fans know and love. Nick Park, who created the show, will return to direct and write, while Aardman Animations will be in charge of making sure the stop motion is spot-on.
According to the BBC, the new film’s plot will be just as high-octane as we’ve come to expect from cheese-loving Wallace and his long-suffering beagle.
“‘Vengeance Most Fowl’ is Wallace & Gromit’s return to their home at the BBC 16 years after their previous adventure. The highly-anticipated feature-length film sees Gromit’s growing concern as Wallace becomes over-dependent on his inventions - which proves justified when Wallace creates a ‘smart gnome’ that seems to develop an evil mind of its own,” the network described in its teasing summary of what to expect.
“As events begin to spiral out of control, it’s up to Gromit to put aside his qualms and battle sinister forces, or Wallace may never be able to invent again!”
Alongside outlining what sounds like one of Wallace & Gromit’s craziest adventures yet, the BBC also revealed that an iconic villain is set to make a grand return.
“But who could possibly be behind such evil actions?! Rightfully behind bars for all this time, Feathers McGraw is back with vengeance. Feathers McGraw was last seen in 1993’s BAFTA and Academy Award winning short The Wrong Trousers,” the summary described.
Unsurprisingly, an all-star cast has been put together for the long-awaited reunion. Ben Whitehead will play eccentric star Wallace, with Peter Kay returning as Chief Inspector Macintosh, helped by new PC recruit Mukherjee, voiced by Lauren Patel. Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh is also on the cast list, alongside beloved comedian Lenny Henry.
The film already has rave reviews from critics, with Time Out's Philip de Semlyen writing: “It’s the two characters with no dialogue at all, Gromit and Feathers, who steal the show - a pair of silent cinema-style adversaries sparring in another joyfully Aardman nostalgic caper.”
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Christmas Day, and will also be available on Netflix from the 3rd January for those outside of the UK.
