Chicago White Sox infielder Yoan Moncada is entering free agent after an injury-riddled 2024 campaign.
Moncada, though injured for much of this year, has flashed great potential across his nine-year MLB career. In two separate seasons (2019 and 2021) Moncada posted WARs over 4.0. He has a career OPS+ over 100 and should generate some sort of interest from contending teams that are looking to buy low on him.
Sports reporter Francys Romero recently confirmed Moncada is generating interest from more than a handful of teams around the league.
"More than five MLB teams are interested in Moncada. Among the teams that have monitored him are the (Toronto) Blue Jays, (New York) Yankees, and (Seattle) Mariners," Romero wrote in a post to X/Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
Seattle is looking to add any sort of offensive production. Specifically, the Mariners are looking for corner infielders, which they could fill with Moncada. Seattle could bring him in for a few million dollars on a one or two-year contract. With a deal like this, the team would have more money to focus on the other offensive holes on the roster.
New York has two holes in its infield right now that it's looking to fill. The Yankees need to replace Gleyber Torres at second base if Torres leaves in free agency. They also need a first baseman to replace Anthony Rizzo. With how expensive re-signing Soto would be, New York may need a budget option like Moncada at first base.
