Wackadoo. It’s really happening for real life. Bluey will be made into a feature length film with the Brisbane based Heeler family taking centre stage in what will surely be a global cinematic juggernaut.
The movie will be made by the original Bluey creators, Ludo Studios with a little bit of Disney Magic sprinkled in and is due for release in 2027.
I think all of us parents of toddlers hoped and dreamed this day would come.

After watching the seven-minute episodes on repeat and repeat and repeat, we were treated to a 28-minute storyline earlier this year with the premiere of ‘The Sign’.
The whole world (under the age of six) was captivated by the jeopardy of Bluey and her sister, Bingo packing up and moving away from their beloved Queensland base.
Would they or wouldn’t they leave the family home for Dad, Bandit to start a new job interstate? It was an emotional rollercoaster and just enough content to whet our appetite for a longer adventure.
According to the official release, the animated film will “continue the adventures of Bluey, a lovable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her Mum, Dad and her little sister, Bingo.”
Not too many clues there on plot but judging by the three seasons released so far, the content will be relatable, entertaining for kids and informative for adults.
I think I’ve learnt more about parenting from Bandit and Chilli than from any standard how-to book on raising children.
The production will be mostly local with 130 jobs created in Queensland to animate Bluey’s imagined world but I’m willing to bet the cast will be international.
Bluey was the most-watched series globally on Disney+ in 2024 so that means any star with young kids is a resolute fan.
Rose Byrne had already voiced Chilli’s older sister, Brandy in an episode, Joel Edgerton excelled as a German shepherd policeman in ‘The Sign’ and Natalie Portman in a whale documentary. Eva Mendes played a glamorous canine yoga instructor, perhaps Ryan Gosling is due for a turn as a burly Great Dane?
There is only one catch.
Bluey’s creator, Joe Brumm has already written to fans to break the bad news.
There will be no season four while the film is in production and Brumm has called time on writing the TV show.
“After some time spent away from the series, working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I’d written a Bluey feature script that I really love. Fast forward through a tonne of contracting and we’re about to embark on making an animated Bluey movie”, he wrote on the Official Bluey website.
“Now, for the trifficult”, he continued.
“I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such”.
It’s not the end of the show but the end of Joe’s involvement. He based Bluey on his kids and they have now grown up.
So will the same happen for Bluey and Bingo? A teenage Blue Heeler battling with the pressures of social media and high school is probably not as palatable as building cubby houses and fairies in the backyard.
My own kids will be six and four by the time the Bluey movie comes out.
We have just come back from Bluey’s world, we already own the bag, the socks, the pyjamas, the sheets, the sticker books, the posters and would willingly hand over our dollar bucks for the popcorn and Gold Class tickets too.
Let’s go Heelers. Hollywood here we come.
