Even superheroes are vulnerable when it comes to love. This week we learned Brandon Routh and Courtney Ford had broken up after OVER TWO DECADES together. And now they’re addressing their split.
A TMZ report revealed Courtney filed for divorce from the Superman Returns star on Wednesday in Los Angeles, citing “irreconcilable differences”. The pair were married for 17 years and share a 12-year-old son named Leo. Courtney requested joint legal and physical custody of the tween, as well as spousal support.

It was heartbreaking news for fans, who got to see them fall in love onscreen, too, in DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow. So… what happened?! On Instagram Friday, the couple made a joint statement regarding their decision to go their separate ways. It read:
“To everyone who has loved and supported us, we have some personal news to share. After 21 years together, and 17 years of marriage, we have decided to begin a new journey, and enter this next chapter of life as friends and co-parents. We are now and forever rooting for each other as we move through this wild adventure called life. Our son is, and will always be, our highest priority, and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate this transition.”
A pretty standard, sort of “conscious uncoupling” type statement. The type that gives us no real idea of what happened that could end a union built over two decades. Hmm.
But don’t expect more! Even putting out this statement clearly wasn’t their idea, at least not yet! In the caption, Courtney sounded extremely indignant about having to make a statement on their breakup — especially considering the circumstances:
“We were focused on grabbing our go-bags and evacuating yesterday. It feels ridiculous to post this statement with fires still raging, but an online publication announced our news before we could.”
Yeah, she was NOT happy about adding that extra stress to the evacuation. We can’t blame her — horrid timing on the filing, the story breaking, everything. She continued:
“We are safe, but in shock and grief for our friends who have lost their homes and businesses. Our hearts break for our community devastated by the ongoing fires. We love you Los Angeles”
Still a lot of “we” statements. That’s encouraging for how amicable they’ll remain. Right? See the full post (below):
Thoughts, Perezcious readers? Were YOU a fan of these two together??
