The trailer for the new Bridget Jones film has dropped - and it's left fans devastated.
While Renee Zellweger is back to resume her iconic role as Bridget, some fans were shocked to discover that Colin Firth - who has played her love interest Mark Darcy since the first film in 2001 - won't be appearing in the new movie. This is because his character has tragically died, leaving Bridget a widow and raising their two children alone.
Single again at the age of 51, the fourth installment of the franchise, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, follows everyone's favourite romantic comedy heroine as she struggles to get on with life without Mark - and perhaps fall in love again. And there are three love interests Bridget could potentially end up with - a teacher from her kids' school, a dreamy younger man who comes to her rescue and Hugh Grant is back as love rat Daniel Cleaver.
At the beginning of the trailer, the news Mark is gone is revealed straight away. Bridget is seen walking as she says: "In life, there are memories that will never leave us." Mark then appears and says his famous words to Bridget: "I like you, just as you are." But it turns out it's all in Bridget's imagination as she turns up at the doorstep of a friend's house alone and the voiceover says: "But sometimes those memories are suddenly all we're left with."
But it was too much for some fans who said they had been left in tears by the realisation Mr Darcy was no more. One fan wrote: "I was not prepared to cry over the death of Mr. Darcy in the new Bridget Jones movie. IS MARK DARCY DEAD???" Another fumed: "I don't want to be in a universe where my beloved Mark Darcy doesn't exist—Um they finally gave her a happy ending kids just to kill mr. darcy? Why?'"
A third cried: "u can't just kill Mr.Darcy like that nooooooooo!!!!" A fourth echoed: "I can't read this. I can't accept Mark's death." While a fifth raged: "Bridget jones without mark darcy what's the point; MARK DARCY AND BRIDGET JONES BEING SEPARATED ONCE AGAIN I MIGHT SCREAM'.
Fans won't have to wait much longer to see the new Bridget Jones film as it's being released in UK cinemas on Valentine's Day - 14 February 2025.

Universal Pictures/YouTube)Elsewhere in the trailer, Bridget's family and friends encourage her to get back out there as her dear old dad tells her from a hospital bed: "It's not about surviving - it's about living."
Old pal Shazza has a more crude approach to what Bridget should do next. "You just have to get laid," she says while sipping on a cocktail. While colleagues rally round and set Bridget up on Tinder in a bid to get her back on the horse four years after Mark's death.
In scenes reminiscent of the infamous fireman's pole incident - where TV reporter Bridget famously flashed her bum while being filmed sliding down one in a fire station - the new film sees her scale a tree while trying to reach her stranded child in North London.
Much to Bridget's delight, she's rescued by the hunky park attendant Rockstar, played by One Day star Leo Woodall. At 29 - almost half her age - Bridget is set to date a younger man.
After enjoying a fling with Rockstar, romance could also blossom with PE teacher Mr Walker, played by 12 Years A Slave actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, as well as reviving her on-off relationship with Hugh Grant's Daniel Cleaver. Fans will just have to wait to see who Bridget finally ends up with...
