California Wildfire Map Shows Where Every Fire Is Burning

3 hours ago 2

Six wildfires are burning in Southern California, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Why It Matters

Earlier this month, two significant wildfires ignited in Los Angeles and quickly grew to encompass thousands of acres. Firefighters are still battling those two blazes, named the Palisades and Eaton fires, and strong winds have returned to the region, spurring on more flames that ignited elsewhere in the state this week.

At least 27 people have died in the Los Angeles area because of the fires, and thousands of people have fled their homes.

What To Know

Red flag warnings have once again been issued across Southern California, with National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists warning of windy conditions that are ideal for rapid fire spread.

Four new wildfires have already started this week.

What People Are Saying

Robert Johnson, a fire captain with Cal Fire, previously told Newsweek: "We have over 200 firefighters assigned to [the Lilac fire] from various different agencies. Firefighters are making good progress, and we are cautiously optimistic."

The NWS Los Angeles office said in a red flag warning: "Dangerous fire weather conditions will persist through Friday as fuels remain extremely dry and ready to burn. Any fire that starts can grow fast and out of control, even if the winds are not
strong."

NWS Los Angeles said in a fire warning issued shortly after the Hughes fire ignited: "FAST MOVING WILDFIRE. AN EVACUATION ORDER HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR West of I-5. LEAVE NOW. Follow instructions from emergency personnel."

What Happens Next

The windy conditions will continue this week, according to multiple weather alerts and warnings from the NWS offices in the area.
