Call of Duty used to be a franchise that would stick to its tone, but in a post-Fortnite world, every game wants a piece of the transmedia pie. Starting in January 2025, Call of Duty will get a crossover with Squid Game, the hit Netflix series.
Activision has teased the crossover with a new video, which shows a COD Operator finding an envelope with the iconic circle, triangle, and square from Squid Game, similar to how other video game characters are invited to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Beyond that, there's no indication of how the crossover will actually play out. However, given the timing of the crossover, expect some direct references to Squid Game Season 2, which premieres on December 26, 2024 on Netflix.
The crossover will be featured in Call of Duty Warzone and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The latter is currently in the middle of its first season of multiplayer content drops.
So what kind of crossover can we expect? Besides the usual skin collaborations, Black Ops 6 might get some games from the series directly integrated into the game, but with a lot of shooting involved. Just imagine playing red light, green light in Call of Duty with some new twist.
Expect some Squid Game-inspired content coming to the COD store, with weapon skins and operator packs being easy guesses. We'll have to wait for the new season to get a better idea of what to expect. Besides Squid Game, Netflix is also getting over 40 original titles this month, so there's plenty to be excited about.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
