Channel 4 describes Dispatches as "an ongoing series of investigative and topical documentaries" covering a wide array of subjects from politics and health to international affairs and environmental issues. The first episode, which aired on October 30, 1987, delved into the shady dealings of the black market in weapons-grade uranium based in Khartoum.

This particular special, named Vinted's Dirty Laundry: Dispatches, was promoted by Channel 4 with the words: "The online secondhand clothes app Vinted is booming. Is its soar-away success too good to be true? Dispatches uncovers the truth behind some of the products sold on the platform."
