Chargers Place Two Key Players on Injured Reserve

The Los Angeles Chargers feel like a new team under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh left Michigan to try and carve out another championship run with a new team, after falling just short with the San Francisco 49ers.

Harbaugh also brought over some people from Michigan, including Jesse Minter, who is now the defensive coordinator of the Chargers, and linebacker Junior Colson — who was drafted No. 69 overall.

Colson has been dealing with injuries throughout this season, only taking the field in six games. Despite hopes the rookie would be impactful in 2024, the ailments he has been dealing with have stalled that.

Colson and another key player for the Chargers have been placed on IR, according to the team's official site.

Colson is being placed on IR due to an ankle injury and wide receiver Simi Fehoko is also being added to the list due to a significant elbow injury. Harbaugh had indicated earlier this week that Fehoko would "miss time" and likely land on IR. That has now happened.

Colson missed Weeks 3 and 4 due to a hamstring issue, and now his ankle will sideline him for at least four games. Through six games of action, Colson has secured seven total tackles and one pass defended.

Fehoko was presumed to step up in a bigger role with the Chargers' receiving room being a bit underwhelming. Through eight games, he has secured 106 yards on six receptions for an average of 17.7 yards per catch.

Though Fehoko has not evolved in the way that he was presumed to, the Chargers are in good shape with rookie Ladd McConkey, who is starting to come into his own. McConkey picked up his first 100+ yard game in Week 8 when he secured 111 yards and two touchdowns.

The Chargers have also designated DJ Chark to return from IR, and he should help to give the team a good downfield threat. Though Fehoko had his time to shine, he will now be out indefinitely with an elbow injury.

The Chargers are 5-3 on the season and are looking like they could secure a playoff berth in Harbaugh's first season leading the team. Should they accomplish that and more, Harbaugh might be up for Coach of the Year.

Los Angeles decided to stay quiet during the NFL trade deadline, believing their roster was good enough to get the job done. That may be the case, but losing Fehoko and Colson is going to be tough to deal with.
