It's a classic Christmas movie enjoyed by hundreds of thousands every year – but it has taken some fans 24 years to notice a 'film-ruining' detail.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey and Taylor Momsen, is considered to be one of the best Christmas movies, having won 18 awards and 37 nominations. However, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a mistake in one of its scenes, which has "ruined" the entire film for some of them.

In a TikTok video, user @cobweb said: "Every time I watch the Grinch, I notice this one little mistake they made where they either forgot to put his contacts in or they forgot to edit them in afterwards, and so Jim Carrey's brown eyes are just there. In the next scene, they're back to that [green]."

Commenting on this, one user said: "You ruined it for me." Another user added: "I just screamed. I've never seen this." A third user said: "I freaking love little details like this." One more user added: "Why is that scary." Another user said: "I've watched the Grinch so many times and never noticed this."

Meanwhile other users shared trivia about how Jim Carrey supposedly had issues with his contacts during production as they caused him great discomfort. One user claimed: "I'm surprised this isn't common knowledge at this point but Jim's eyes got incredibly irritated with the contacts so they did have to edit it.

"But there are more scenes then just this one that show his normal eyes they only focused on the up close scenes." Another user added: "They were these massive contacts that he had to put in, to the point they hired a interrogation specialist to help him cope with the discomfort."

Another user joked: "I'm picturing whoever was in charge of this waking up in the middle of the night in a panic realising the forgot the Grinch's eyes."

Special effects makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji, who worked with Carrey on the film, recalled in a 2017 interview with Vulture how the contact lenses, as well as the heavy prosthetics he had to wear, took his toll on the actor.

"Once we were on set, he was really mean to everybody and at the beginning of the production they couldn't finish," Tsuji said.

Directed by Ron Howard, the 2000 film is an adaptation of Dr Seuss' creation about a grumpy, green recluse who lives outside the town of Whoville and attempts to stop Christmas from being celebrated there by dressing up as Santa Claus and stealing trees, presents and food.

As the movie goes on, the Grinch interacts with a young girl, Cindy Lou Who, as well as other villagers who try to show him the joy of Christmas.

Dr Seuss originally introduced the Grinch in a 33-line illustrated poem called "The Hoobub and the Grinch" in the May 1955 edition of Redbook magazine. He started work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas! a couple of years later, starting the project around 1957.

Around this time, his wife Helen Palmer Geisel was struggling with ongoing medical problems, suffering a small stroke in April 1957. Dr Seuss says he was the inspiration for the Grinch as his wife's health problems, coupled with his disgust with the commercialisation of Christmas, made him feel "very Grinchish" one festive season.
