When the Indianapolis Colts take the field this weekend against the Houston Texans, they will do so with one of their star defenders playing in the game. They are activating star defensive end DeForest Buckner from injuries reserve and he will play.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the activation news on social media.
Buckner has been out for a few weeks while dealing with a sprained ankle and the Colts defensive unit has missed him. He is the leader for Indianapolis on the defensive side of the ball so his presence will be greatly appreciated against Houston.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen was complimentary of Buckner during his recovery time. He knows the impact that he can have on a game and will be happy to see his star run out onto the field this week.
"That guy is so freaking tough," Steichen said, "but I know he'll attack his rehab and be ready to roll when he comes back."
Buckner has emerged as one of the better pass rushers in the NFL and has dominated since being drafted. He has registered at least seven sacks in each of his last six seasons, putting up eight sacks and 81 total tackles last season.
Buckner doesn't miss games often as these few this season were the first since his rookie season, other than games due to Covid-19 protocols. He is the "iron man" of the Colts and his teammates are excited to have him back.
"You don't play this long without going through a lot of injuries and adversity and pushing through them," center Ryan Kelly said. "One of the biggest things you can be in the NFL is available and consistent and he's done that his whole career. So if you see him on IR, that means he's hurt.
"But I know what a great leader and great man he is. ... It's pretty freaking impressive, man. It's a true iron man mentality. I think that's certainly why he's been as consistent as he's been here for so long."
Getting Buckner back for this game against the Texans will be huge as Houston is one of the better offensive teams in the league. The former Oregon product should be able to help slow them down as the Colts try to continue their winning ways.
They have won two straight games and sit with a record of 4-3 on the year. If they can take down the Texans, Indianapolis could start to fully believe in making the playoffs.
