"That's the only regret I have in my career."
Comedian and radio host Jess Hilarious is taking accountability for a distasteful joke she made about Chadwick Boseman before his cancer diagnosis was revealed.
Chadwick died on Aug. 28, 2020 at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. The famed actor was diagnosed with stage III in 2016, and it later progressed to stage IV.
The celebrated artist was widely known for his infectious personality and talent, and the way he lit up the screen in projects like Black Panther, Get On Up, 42, and 21 Bridges.
A personal statement from his social media accounts revealed said, "From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and several more — all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy."
Chadwick's diagnosis was not made public until his passing, but changes in his physical appearance became noticeable by fans, specifically his weight loss. Without knowing about his illness, many believed his dramatic weight loss was linked to preparation for a new role, especially since Chadwick identifies as a method actor — and jokes and comments were made online because of it.
Jess made a joke about Chadwick without knowing he was was sick, and she recently revealed how the joke has become one of her biggest regrets. In a new The Dr. Wendy Show interview with Real Housewives of Potomac's Dr. Wendy Osefo, Jess took accountability for her comments.
"This is the only regret I have in my career — not with family or anything — I don't regret anything except for this one joke I told about Chadwick Boseman before he passed...before we all figured out he had cancer."
"He made a video. This was around COVID and he made a video telling people to stay in the house because this COVID thing [was] spreading, it's dangerous, and people are dying."
"I thought he was losing weight for a movie, cuz you know he was a method actor and a phenomenal actor. I had said something about his appearance...how he looked like he was losing weight, and then that man passed away maybe two or three weeks later."
Jess, whose real name is Jessica Moore, revealed the backlash she received from other people isn't what hurt the most, it was the fact that she wasn't the type of person who would make fun of someone who was sick. Despite her "messy" persona, she says she's still a "very good person."
"I would never ever joke about someone with an illness or a disease, or something that they can't control," added The Breakfast Club co-host. "It made me so sick to my stomach. I was like, 'Oh my god!'"
"While I'm over here making people laugh and saying whatever the hell I want and what's on my mind, you never know what somebody's going through. You don't know."
The incident transformed the way she viewed herself and her growing platform, which currently has 5.6 million followers on Instagram. Jess made the joke in an episode of her Jess with the Mess series. She took a step back from the series for "about five months" after Chadwick passed.
"That's the only regret I have in my career."
Her response was met with mixed reactions online. Some believed she wasn't remorseful, some applauded her for taking accountability, and some even acknowledged their own actions during that time:
It was a lesson for me also I laughed at some of the jokes not knowing the situation I felt horrible and I’ll never laugh at a person again because of weight loss you never know what people are going through
