'Connections' January 14: Hints and Answers for Puzzle #583

11 hours ago 11

If you're struggling with Tuesday's Connections puzzle, Newsweek has provided a variety of helpful clues.

The wildly popular brainteaser was launched by The New York Times in June 2023 and has gone on to become the publication's second-most played game behind Wordle.

While Wordle, which was created by Josh Wardle, requires players to find one word a day, Connections challenges players to find common threads between a series of words. Players must group them into categories.

Here Newsweek has shared everything you need to know about today's game. But be careful when scrolling, as the answers are at the end of the article.

How To Play Connections

The aim is to find four words that link together into a category, with there being four groups in total. Each group is coded by a color to indicate difficulty: yellow for the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple for more challenging sets.

The puzzles often incorporate homophones, wordplay, and other clever twists, ensuring they are rarely straightforward. Players can use the shuffle button to mix up the words on screen if they get stuck.

Users have four attempts, or lives, to correctly guess the four groups. If you are unable to get all four connections, the answers and their corresponding difficulty color will be revealed at the end.

When asked what tips she can provide players, Connections editor Wyna Liu previously told Newsweek: "One suggestion that may help save some guesses is if you start selecting cards and notice that there are five or more that belong to that category, try pivoting to a different category before making that first guess. Doing so might take one of those extra cards out of contention, or at least remove a few cards from the board, making other categories easier to see."
