Friends star Courteney Cox honored her late costar Matthew Perry on the one-year anniversary of his death.
Courteney, 60, took to Instagram on Monday, October 28, to share a tribute that featured a vintage snapshot of the pair smiling at each other, as well as a group photo of them with their castmates Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.
“Missing you today and always,” Courteney wrote alongside a red heart emoji, tagging the Matthew Perry Foundation’s Instagram account.
Shortly after Courteney shared the post, several of her followers took to the comments section to express their condolences. “Forever in our hearts,” one person wrote, and another chimed in, “He is always with us.”
Courteney and Matthew starred on the beloved sitcom from 1994 until 2004, and they played fan favorite couple Monica Gellar and Chandler Bing.
Matthew died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54 at his Pacific Palisades home. The 17 Again actor was found unresponsive in the hot tub. It was initially believed that he drowned, though his cause of death was later revealed as the “acute effects of ketamine.” Matthew had been receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat anxiety and depression. However, his last treatment had been a week and a half before his sudden passing.
After his cause of death was determined, an investigation was launched and it was found that the ketamine Matthew ingested had not been legally prescribed by a doctor. Dr. Mark Chavez, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, Erik Fleming, Kenneth Iwamasa and Javeen Sangha, a woman known as “the Ketamine Queen,” were arrested on August 15 for their involvement in Matthew’s death.
Chavez, 54, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine on October 2, and both Iwamasa, 59, and Fleming, 54, also pleaded guilty. Sangha, 41, and Plasencia, 42, have both pleaded not guilty.
Just days after Matthew’s death, Courteney and her costars released a joint statement to address the news on October 30, 2023. “We are all so utterly devastated,” the group wrote. “We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve.”
Courteney has continued to be open about grieving the loss of Matthew following his death, and she previously revealed how she keeps him close while discussing the 20th anniversary of the Friends finale during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning in May.
“You know, he’s just so funny. He has genuinely a huge heart, obviously struggled,” she said about Matthew at the time. “I’m so thankful I got to work so closely with him for so many years. He visits me a lot, if we believe in that.”
Courteney added that she believes her late family and friends have reappeared as spirits following their deaths to help guide her. “You know, I talk to my mom, my dad, Matthew — I feel like there are a lotta people that, I think, guide us,” she continued. “I do sense, yeah, I sense Matthew’s around for sure.”
