Cubs Make Trade, Acquire Former Top-100 Prospect: Reports

2 days ago 6

The Chicago Cubs continued their busy offseason on the trade front by acquiring a former top-100 prospect from the Miami Marlins, according to multiple reports Sunday.

Vidal Brujan, 26, has played every position except for catcher in parts of four major league seasons with the Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays. He's a career .189/.261/.270 hitter and projects to join the Cubs' bench in 2025.

First baseman Matt Mervis, a former top-100 prospect himself, is headed to Miami.

Mervis, 26, has three home runs and 14 RBIs in 36 games with the Cubs over the last two seasons, slashing .155/.222/.259. He also struck out 40 times in 127 plate appearances.

With Miami, Mervis addresses an area of weakness. The Marlins had only one first baseman (Jonah Bride) on their projected Opening Day roster following the trade of Jake Burger to the Texas Rangers.
