Winning I'm A Celebrity for McFly man Danny Jones has helped him show people what he is 'really like' for the first time - Danny is now ready to be himself in front of the camera
Danny Jones said winning I’m A Celebrity has made him realise he doesn’t need to hide behind his bandmates.
Despite seeming confident during TV appearances, during his 22 years in showbiz, the McFly star has battled nerves, insecurities and anxiety. But he revealed being crowned King of the Jungle last month means he’s finally comfortable in his own skin.
It’s given the Bolton-born lad, 38, a massive boost. He told the Daily Star Sunday: “For my whole career, I’ve always been protected by my persona as Danny From McFly. But that’s a character… that isn’t the person who goes home and is vulnerable. It’s not the real me.
“So I’m A Celebrity was really important as people were seeing what I’m really like for the first time. It was my personality at my worst, when I was hungry and tired. I wasn’t protected by my vocals or my guitar. I was just me. That was f***ing scary.
“But doing that and realising you’re loved for your personality is a massive thing. When I won, I thought, ‘Ah, people understand me’. I’d connected with the public in a different way.”
Danny is now ready to be himself in front of the camera. These days he doesn’t worry as much about what might go wrong.
He said: “I’ve always been reliant on my band to talk for me in interviews, but now I’ve realised my personality is all right. I used to be scared of live TV. I’d think, ‘Ooh, I’d better not say the wrong thing’. I didn’t know if you could have fun on live TV.
“But I’ve realised that you can. You’ve just got to see TV for what it is and not be scared of it. I know that all my intentions are right.”
Danny’s stint on I’m A Celebrity has also gained him a new legion of fans. Since arriving back from Australia, he’s been recognised even more than usual.
He said: “A lot of people have been coming up to me. It’s great. There have been a lot of kids and people from the older generation. That’s what I’m seeing.”
Danny’s boost in popularity is great for McFly. The group have been around since 2003 and they’re keen to continue for years to come.
Over the years the other members — Harry Judd, Dougie Poynter and Tom Fletcher — have also done reality shows in a bid to boost the fanbase.
Danny said: “Me doing I’m A Celebrity has made people more aware of McFly. It’s great for the band. The music industry is hard these days, so you try your best to stay relevant. We have to find ways to do it. It’s also fun to try new things. We have all got things going on that keep us satisfied and happy.”
