David Walliams has made a candid confession about his sexuality and gender, stating that he ‘probably’ identifies as non-binary.
The comedian and former Britain’s Got Talent judge has long been at the centre of debate regarding his identity and has previously shared that he had ‘gay experiences’ growing up.
In a new interview, the best-selling children’s author, 53, admitted that if the language we use now for sexuality and gender was available to him as a youngster, he most likely would’ve identified differently.
Chatting on the Australian podcast Uncomfortable Conversations with Josh Szeps, David said: ‘I think, in a way, I’d probably say I am non-binary, I think. I don’t know exactly.’
He went on to recall his teenage years, adding: ‘It’s interesting because I had this girlfriend at the end of university and we used to go out.
‘I used to go out to gay clubs and dance for like six hours, and I’d be wearing a skirt and stuff like that.’
David explained that he finds change ‘interesting’, having written a book titled The Boy in the Dress 15 years ago, which was considered ‘daring’ for the time.
‘I’ve always sort of felt like celebrating difference, so I’ve always thought it’s exciting.’
The Little Britain star also reflected: ‘I sort of think, where would I be positioning myself maybe, if I was now 19 or 20?
‘Because I went to Bristol University and did a drama degree. And I think that course is where you’re probably… if there’s a group of people who are going to be most interested in that sort of area, most drawn to that area, it’s probably going to be drama students.’
After discussing his feelings about gender, David was quizzed on sexuality, with host Josh Szeps noting that he has always leaned into the label of ‘Britain’s most famous bi-curious comedian’.
Asked if he has ‘fooled around with guys’, he replied: ‘Yeah, I’d say so. Yeah, so I was always at home with that as well.
‘Sometimes I think my life would be a lot easier if I was just gay. Because I’m really drawn to gay things. I really like gay culture.’
Discussing queer culture, David namedropped his longtime pal and collaborator Matt Lucas, who is gay.
He acknowledged that it’s ‘interesting’ how Matt is ‘into football and he’s into musicals as well’.
‘But I’d say I’m probably sort of camper than him. It’s hard, I don’t know.’
David, who was axed from BGT in 2022 after a decade on the panel, shares an 11-year-old son, Alfred, with ex-wife and model Lara Stone.
They tied the knot in 2010 during a lavish Claridge’s hotel ceremony before divorcing in 2015.
Lara once revealed that she struggled with all the attention on their relationship, recalling a ‘terrifying’ experience to Dutch Vogue.
‘I’d been at his house and was walking back to the Tube and this car was driving next to me, and they were taking pictures the whole time. It was just so bewildering and terrifying.’
Other women David has been romantically linked to in the past include Made in Chelsea star Ashley James, Playboy model Emily Agnes, and Miss Norway contender Sylvia Flote.
However, since his marriage ended, the funnyman has kept his romantic life private.
