The Los Angeles Dodgers have long been looked at as the favorites to sign free-agent outfielder Teoscar Hernández this winter. It seems like a very cut-and-dry case.
Hernández was a huge piece of the Dodgers' World Series title and he seemingly loved his time in Dodger Blue. Los Angeles has a hole in its outfield and the slugging righty reportedly wants to come back.
But he hasn't signed yet, which could indicate some action from other organizations.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently linked a few teams to Hernández. While he recognized the Dodgers as an obvious suitor, Heyman also listed two American League East teams in the running.
"He flat told me '1,000 percent' he wanted to return to the Dodgers," Heyman wrote. "And who wouldn't? But the (Boston) Red Sox and his old (Toronto Blue) Jays (and possibly his old (Seattle) Mariners) are apparently giving him something to think about. A great bat and a terrific clubhouse guy who should capitalize on his huge year in LA."
The Red Sox and the Blue Jays are both very realistic suitors. While the Mariners need offense, it's the infield that needs more work than the outfield. Seattle could find a spot for Hernández, obviously, but it has bigger needs.
The Blue Jays need an outfielder and a reunion with Hernández makes perfect sense. Toronto needs any talent it can get and the righty played there for six years. The front office has the money and the need, but they may have to overpay to pull him from Los Angeles.
The Red Sox aren't as desperate for an outfielder as the Blue Jays are, but Boston still has so much money that it could be a real suitor in these sweepstakes. If the Dodgers aren't willing to pay him a certain number, the Red Sox could offer whatever he wants to land him.
