Dog Returned to Shelter Within Month Finds Home Just in Time for Christmas

A dog with medical issues has found a home just in time for Christmas after being returned to a shelter a few weeks after being adopted.

Taffy the Boston terrier came into the care of rescue Boston Buddies, based in southern California, in mid-December when her new owners returned her to a shelter after changing their mind. The pup had a history of seizures, which Boston Buddies says her adopters were told about — but she was brought back to the shelter in the middle of a seizure, as the owners were unable to cope.

Boston Buddies shared Taffy's story to their Facebook page on December 14 with an "urgent" appeal: "Foster home needed ASAP." The rescue shared a photo of black-and-white pup, and said she had been adopted from a shelter "earlier this month."

The shelter put out an appeal for help when she was returned, which Boston Buddies gladly answered, taking over her care immediately and rushing her to the vet, where they were able to stop the seizures. While she then recovered, she was not 100 percent back to normal, and Boston Buddies was "desperately looking for a foster home for her."

They described Taffy as "very sweet and loves attention and affection," and hoped to find a foster home with experience in dogs with seizures — or just "to be open to the experience and willing to learn how to care for a seizure dog."

A home where the foster carer is around often, or someone who can bring Taffy to a quiet office to work, just to keep an eye on her while the medication sets in, would be necessary, they wrote, and added: "Taffy is exactly the type of dog we like to help - but we need the help of a foster home for Taffy."

And animal lovers stepped up in a big way, with Boston Buddies' Facebook post racking up hundreds of likes and dozens of comments from people wanting to help.

Amid multiple offers of fostering or hoping for more information on Taffy, others praised the rescue and Taffy herself, one writing: "Precious girl. She deserves love like all of them."

"Poor baby!!! I would take her in a heartbeat," another said, as one called Taffy "adorable", and one wrote: "I pray the right person comes along."

The prayers were answered, as Boston Buddies later shared a positive update — that Taffy "has found a foster home and is doing well with her seizure treatment."

Any dog can have a seizure, but some breeds are more susceptible, according to the American Kennel Club's Canine Health Foundation. These breeds include German shepherds, collies and French bulldogs.

A dog regularly having seizures can be managed by anti-epileptic or anti-convulsant medication and avoiding any known triggers. But any seizure lasting more than five minutes, or any more than three seizures within a 24-hour period, is classed as an emergency, the organization writes.
