The convicted politician, who was impeached twice, managed to win with 277 electoral votes.

Donald J. Trump has defeated Kamala Harris to win the 2024 Presidential Election, CNN projects. The convicted criminal managed to shock Democrats and some of the nation, riding the wave of disdain for President Joe Biden’s handling of the country to a lopsided victory.

MSNBC reports that the twice impeached politician scored 277 electoral college votes, while Harris limped along to the finish with 224 electoral votes. It should be noted that, as of 9:20 AM EST on Wednesday (Nov. 6), the total count has not been completed, but statistics point to a Trump win that could be finalized in the coming days.

During election night, Kamala Harris and her team took up HQ at her alma mater, Howard University, preparing a speech for her expected victory. As Trump won key battleground states like North Carolina and Georgia and put the battle out of reach, Harris and her team called off the speech and told crowds to go home.

“We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet,” Cedric Richmond, Harris campaign co-chair, told the Howard crowd per MSNBC. “We will continue overnight to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken.”

Richmond reassured the crowd that Vice President Harris would make a speech on Wednesday. It’s unclear whether the California native will concede the race or demand a recount during her planned speech.

Trump’s win is groundbreaking for many reasons, but for one, it marks the first time in decades that more Americans identified as Republicans than Democrats. The controversial figure is now the first Republican candidate to win the national popular vote in twenty years and is the first person with a criminal record to win the nation’s presidency.

So, what does Trump’s win mean for his criminal charges and planned November court date? Well, they’re put on hold for the next four years. I’m not even kidding. According to Reuters, Trump’s victory will effectively put a pause on the criminal case against him. Supreme Court rulings explicitly state that “the Court concludes that the President is absolutely immune from criminal prosecution for conduct within his exclusive sphere of constitutional authority.”

With two criminal cases pending, Trump plans to use his power to get himself out of any legal jams that are hanging over his head. In fact, Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in October that, if he were to win the presidency, he would fire U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith “within two seconds” of being legally sworn in. If you’re unaware, Smith is the man who led the prosecutions against Trump for trying to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump vowed to take revenge against those who have tried to hold him accountable in a court of law and disagreed with his governance of the country.

That is who our “new” president is.

Apropos of nothing, here is the definition of “fascist”: “associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by forcible suppression of opposition,” per Merriam-Webster.

Happy election day, America.
