The just-released Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an RPG, and modern RPGs tend to be 40 hours or way, way more, if you play your cards right. But if you’re expecting to finish the game and continue the story of your Rook with some post-launch adventures, you’ll be disappointed to hear that won’t be happening.
Speaking with creative director Jon Epler, Rolling Stone got word there’s no plans for Veilguard to get any expansions or DLC stories. With the game now out (and doing pretty well on PC, at least), BioWare “has now shifted [focus] entirely” to the untitled fifth Mass Effect game first teased back in 2020. That’s not to say Veilguard is completely being abandoned, though: according to IGN, the studio aims to give Veilguard quality-of-life improvements and small content updates, the details of which are currently unknown. It probably won’t be on the extensive level as Larian’s sizable updates to Baldur’s Gate 3 five or six times, but it’s something.
Still, the lack of substantial DLC here is notable, given BioWare’s history with the format. Since the orignal Mass Effect, the studio’s put out sizable post-launch content for their games, many of which have been very good. Some of these have also been pretty crucial into setting up the story for what’s to come: Tresspasser gives runway for Veilguard, Mass Effect 2: Arrival establishes Mass Effect 3, and Dragon Age II’s Legacy prepares you for Inquisition. (Even Anthem, however briefly, got post-launch material intended as the first of a three-act story that would’ve gone…somewhere.)
But again, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a sizable game regardless. At time of writing, I’ve got about 38 hours of playtime and still have plenty to do, and that’s just in the first playthrough. You’ll get your money’s worth if you take your time and don’t try to power through it, and if that’s not your jam, there’s always Metaphor: ReFantazio.
