Dwyane Wade, a great player in his time with the Miami Heat, went through a real nightmare at the end of 2023 that would mark his life.
Almost a year ago, the former basketball player had 40% of his right kidney removed. He sat down for an interview with People magazine to give more details about his process and what went through his mind during one of the most difficult moments of his life.
His initial symptoms caused a lot of uncertainty: stomach problems, cramps, and that he was urinating slowly. In this case, his father was suffering from prostate cancer.
After some tests on his urine and body by the medical team, they gave him terrible news, something he never thought he would hear. Dwyane had a tumor and needed surgery.
Wade had to have this surgery, he had no choice and he was a little scared, but he had to go into the operating room to avoid a tragedy.
The tumor was more than that
For his good news, everything went well in the surgery, Dwyane had taken a lot of pressure off, but the doctors told him that it was not just any tumor, but something cancerous.
This left Wade in shock as he never imagined that the tumor he had was so serious. It was an experience that shaped him and taught him many things, including the importance of family.
"I think my own experience leading up to the surgery was the first time my family, my father and my children, saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest I have ever felt in my life," he told People.
Best decision of his life
No matter how many flashbacks he had to his father's situation, Dwyane had to make the decision to go through with the surgery. The former player has absolutely no regrets and is very happy that he made the decision before it was too late:
"I had to make a personal decision. If this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst is cancerous, in your kidney, you're 41 years old, you probably need surgery because it's something that needs to be removed so it doesn't spread," he also said to himself as he thought about what to do.
"As a man, you never want your family to see you weak," he said. I don't want them to see me like this, I don't want them to see me in my weakest moments, but I had to do it," Dwyane Wade revealed.
