Ever since Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021, the world has gotten quite familiar with Vice President Kamala Harris‘ stepdaughter Ella Emhoff. After all, in addition to wowing us with her edgy fashion choices, her unapologetic lifestyle and openness have changed what a presidential family can really look like. So, of course, it’s no wonder that other celebs are fond of her too.

At the 2024 CFDA Awards on Oct. 28, Emhoff shared a sweet moment with The Real Housewives of New York City star Jenna Lyons, who was hosting the red carpet. “I’m such a big fan of you,” Emhoff said as she approached Lyons. “Girl same, I can’t even believe you know who I am,” Lyons replied, taking Emhoff’s hands into hers. “Are you kidding me? I can’t believe you know who I am,” Emhoff said.
“Your life has exploded, you are like a breath of fresh air,” Lyons told the 25-year-old. “It’s been so incredible to see you. Every kid I know is seeing you, knows your name, is singing your praises. The way you play with fashion and are so unabashedly yourself is the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen.”
“It makes me so happy to hear,” Emhoff replied.
The pair then talked a bit about Emhoff’s look of the night, a handspun two-piece set from Coach. “This is made with handspun yarn out of all of their old fabric swatches and they’re knit swatches,” Emhoff said. “So they’re re-spun it into a new yarn and it’s hand knit.”
In the end, Lyons said goodbye by sending her best wishes to Emhoff’s stepmom, who just happens to be the Democratic presidential candidate for the election next week.
“I’m thinking positive thoughts and I hope the next time I see you, we’ll be in a very big white house,” she said. “I’ll be rooting for you and your family.”
The adorable moment between Emhoff and Lyons marked Emhoff’s first red carpet since relaunching her knit club, the Soft Hands Knit Club. The relaunch happened a few months after she stopped the in-person club meetings for her own protection.
“I’m a maker,” Emhoff said in her Substack announcement. “Give me a material, and I’m going to make something fun out of it. I’ve been making arts and crafts since I was a kid, mainly using it as an outlet for the immense anxiety that was beginning to take over me. I spent all my time making and kept finding new ways to make it the center of my life.”
“I started as a children’s ceramics teacher at a summer camp, moved on to working as an artist’s fabricator (best job ever), and worked in the fashion world for a sec (desk job),” she remembered. “Then I took a quick detour modeling while I figured out how I wanted to blend my love of art and this newfound platform I fell into. Many different steps led me to creating my beloved knitting community, ‘Soft Hands Knit Club’ (I’ll go into it, don’t worry), and then other steps led me to having to stop it (that I may not go into).”
“But here we are! Here you are!” she continued. “The best things come from having to adapt.” We love to see it!
