77-year-old music industry legend Elton John has revealed that he lost his eyesight after battling an nfection.
While in attendance for a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical, based on the 2006 film of the same name, John shared with the audience that he is unable to watch the musical. "I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight," said John, who wrote the music for the show. "So it's hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it and boy it sounded good tonight."
During his speech at the end of the performance, John thanked his husband David Furnish for helping him through his health issues and described him as his "rock."
In September, John announced that he was left blind in one eye and with "only limited vision" in the other because of an infection. "I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye," he wrote on social media. "I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks."
At the premiere of his documentary Elton John: Never Too Late in October, he told the crowd that his eyesight wasn't the only health issue he was struggling with. “To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” he said, per NME. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate, I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip. But I'm still here."
