Estranged Husband Kills Pregnant Wife’s Rainbow Baby After Suspecting It Wasn’t His

Kayla Netherland was 20 weeks pregnant with her rainbow baby when her estranged husband shot her five times in the back. Jeremy McBride, 36, remains in police custody on several charges related to the planning of the incident. While Kayla survived the attack, her unborn child did not, per Fox 59.

Husband Confesses To Killing Wife’s Unborn Rainbow Baby

An Indianapolis Metro PD affidavit describes a phone call on January 19 over a shooting. A female witness had pulled up to Kayla’s home to do laundry but instead discovered Jeremy McBride standing next to Netherland’s bleeding body on the bathroom floor. At the time, the woman said the estranged husband appeared to be on the phone saying someone was shot. He reportedly left the scene before cops arrived. However, in the woman’s 911 call, she said he called to inform her he was turning himself in.

Police tracked him before he could get to the station, pulled him over, and arrested him. During the arrest, he reportedly told officers the gun was in his car, which checked out. After a search warrant, investigators also found an extended magazine clip and two loaded handgun magazines.

During his interview with police, Jeremy McBride admitted to plotting his estranged wife’s death and the death of her unborn rainbow baby. McBride was planning to kill himself as well. He also shared that he had practiced his aim several times before the attack. The bullets that struck Kayla ultimately traveled to her abdomen and killed the 20-week-old fetus, which McBride admitted to being jealous that he was not the father.

“McBride admitted to thinking of his plans over the course of several days, and stated that he shot his wife multiple times while she was turned away from him in the residence,” the probable cause affidavit says.

Prosecutors said McBride revealed he was upset over Kayla’s pregnancy after they struggled with infertility. He claimed she had been unfaithful and gotten pregnant by someone else despite their divorce not being finalized. Jeremy also had several written notes detailing his paternity rage and jealousy.

“Maybe she will come back one day, but not for me. But in many ways, I killed her,” Jeremy McBride reportedly said.

Woman’s Family Shares Her Health Status

Kayla’s family told WRTV that she was out of surgery following the shooting but underwent multiple surgeries. At this time, it’s unclear if the 25-year-old will be able to become pregnant again. She has not spoken out about losing her rainbow baby in this manner.

“She was 5 months pregnant with her miracle baby, after several failed pregnancies in the past, and she has lost her baby due to this outrageous crime committed against her. She is alive, and not paralyzed, thank God, but she has already undergone several surgeries including the removal of her left ovary, left fallopian tube, part of her small intestine, and part of her colon, and some repairs have been made to her uterus,” the family said.

As mentioned, the 36-year-old is behind bars at Marion County Jail on charges of attempted murder with attempted intentional killing of another and feticide. He had his initial hearing in the case on Friday, Janaury 24.
