There’s been a growing trend in Hollywood that began during the pandemic and has continued as a heated political landscape has some celebrities taking stock of their life here in the U.S. Eva Longoria is the latest star to admit that she and her family packed up their bags and left.

Longoria shared with Marie Claire that she and her husband, José Bastón, decided to raise their son Santiago, 6, in Spain and Mexico. It wasn’t a decision they made lightly though. “I had my whole adult life here,” the 49-year-old actress said of Los Angeles. “But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to s**t on California—it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”

Longoria still cares about what happens to her home country; the Desperate Housewives star was active in the 2024 presidential election, campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris for most of the summer. She wants things to improve for every American and she understands how “privileged” she is to have choices on where her family lives. “I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky,” she added. “They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”

Longoria isn’t the only celebrity to say goodbye to the U.S. for now, George and Amal Clooney recently sold their longtime Studio City, California home after planting roots in Europe. America Ferrera is also reportedly moving her family to the U.K. after Donald Trump’s win over Kamala Harris. “America is sick that Donald Trump is President again. She is devastated that Kamala lost. She thought the country she lived in was better than that,” a Daily Mail source explained. “She is going to continue to have a presence in the US for work purposes and to fight for Latinas and women, but she will be overseas for family and to benefit her kids’ education.”

In addition to the political situation, Los Angeles has been experiencing what the Los Angeles Times described as an “exodus” of TV and film production. California can’t compete with the tax incentives of other states, Canada, and Europe, which has resulted in a huge loss of jobs in the area. Celebrities can now live anywhere they want since Los Angeles studios are used less frequently in the past.

That’s how Longoria and other stars are navigating their careers — they fly in for the work and then head back to their new paradise. It’s a trend that likely won’t end anytime soon for celebrities who can afford to call another country home.
