Popeye is set to get a drastic makeover, as the once loved sailor will now take the role of a crazed serial killer, as he is seen popping brains out of skulls. The movie is coming soon
While Popeye was previously a much-loved character with a "heart of gold", movie makers have now turned the sailor into a cold-blooded killer.
The distributing company VMI Worldwide, who took on the much-anticipated project, have finally announced the release date for the new movie. Popeye the Slayer Man will take a new take on the loved comic, where a man in a spinach factory turns into a crazed killer. The trailer was released last month with mixed reactions, but the distributor has said fans won't have to wait long until they can watch.
Popeye will have its first release next month in Berlin and North Americans can expect to see it in early Spring. Jessica Russo, COO, Productions and Acquisitions at VMI said: “Popeye the Slayer Man’s dark reimagining of the classic Popeye character not only delivers a fresh take on a beloved icon but also showcases its thrilling storytelling and bold visual style.
"We’re thrilled to bring this unique and exciting film to EFM, offering buyers something truly unexpected and unforgettable.
“We went old-school with this movie, using practical effects for the horror. We wanted the film to have a more visceral feel reminiscent of the classic horror films of the ‘80s.”
This film centres around a group of friends who break into an abandoned spinach canning factory as part of a documentary. According to local legend, there is a 'Sailor Man,’ who is said to haunt the factory and local docks.
The trailer shows many gruesome killings, including one incident where a menacing Popeye snaps a student's wrist, with blood spurting out. Later, a woman gets stabbed through the head and another has their brain popped out of their skull by Popeye.
Many fans warn this might not be for the faint-hearted, but several seem pleased at the new take. One commented underneath the YouTube trailer: "What's next? Betty Boop the witch?" Another sarcastically added: "The old abandoned spinach canning factory, that closed due to spinach contamination you say? Real creative guys."
A third noted: "Nothing will be as good as '80s slashers." An annoyed user simply expressed: "Some things just shouldn't be made."
On the other hand, some are looking forward to the release.
"Awwww man I’m watching this," a fan said with several excited emojis. Someone defended Popeye against the criticism: "I'm not gonna lie. I actually enjoy watching these types of films."
