Cameras have started rolling on the new Netflix limited series inspired by John Steinbeck's 1952 novel, East of Eden, and some sneaky previews from the set have begun circulating on social media.

Florence Pugh and Christopher Abbott have been spotted in full hair, costume, and makeup in character as Cathy Ames and Adam Trask.

Pugh dons a floor-length deep blue skirt and blazer-style jacket combination, with Abbott in a navy suit and hat, complete with a silver waistcoat chain, clutching a weekender-style bag.

Production was said to have commenced in October 2024, as per Netflix, who announced that the seven-episode limited series from writer and executive producer Zoe Kazan would be shot across locations in New Zealand.

The project has sentimental roots for Kazan, whose grandfather is the two-time Oscar-winning Elia Kazan.

Kazan told Netflix, "In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me."

East of Eden takes place predominately in the Salinas Valley in California at the end of World War I and is said to be a re-telling of the Bible tale of Cain and Abel.

The narrative alternates between California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts and travels back to the American Civil War, telling the story of three primary characters, Adam, Charles, and Cyrus Trask, through the eyes of Cathy Ames.

Joining Pugh and Abbott in the cast is Mike Faist as Charles Trask and Tracy Letts and Cyrus Trask, along with Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Hoon Lee as Lee, Joe Anders as Aron Trask, and Joseph Zada as Cal Trask.

Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre share director duties, with Davis helming episodes one to four and Clermont-Tonnerre on episodes five to seven.

Kazan's joined by executive producers Zack Hayden and Garth Davis, with co-executive producer Jeb Stuart. Antoine Douaihy also produces, with Florence Pugh serving as a co-producer.

Netflix's Vice President of Scripted Series at Netflix, Peter Friedlander, told Netflix that "Zoe's thoughtful and artistic vision pays homage to her grandfather's revered film adaptation while beautifully honoring and introducing new audiences to a true canon of American literature."

East of Eden does not yet have a release date.
