Oscar-nominated actor Teri Garr has passed away, aged 79, it's been announced.
The late star of the screen is best known for her roles in films like Young Frankenstein (1974), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Tootsie (1982). Teri is also known for her role on Friends, having played the character Phoebe Buffay (played by Lisa Kudrow)'s estranged birth mother, Phoebe Abbott, in three episodes in the 1990s.
Teri's career include a role in Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation (1974). That same year, she appeared as Inga, the assistant of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder), in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974). She went on to star as Ronnie Neary, the wife of lead character Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
Her most notable credits include having played Sandy Lester in Tootsie (1982), starring alongside Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange in the film. She was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance, though the accolade went to co-star Jessica.
Over the course of her career, Teri also appeared in the films After Hours (1985), Dumb and Dumber (1994) and Kabluey (2007), with the later reuniting her with former on-screen daughter Lisa. Her TV credits include M*A*S*H, Frasier, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
As previously reported, Teri was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1999 and had a brain aneurysm in 2006 that left her in a coma for several weeks. However, following her recovery, she's said to have briefly returned to acting in 2011.
