From "Avatar" To "Wicked" – Nine Hotly Awaited Sequels To Look Forward To This Year

3 hours ago 2

I cannot WAIT for 28 Years Later.

While the film world seems to be awash with sequels of late, that doesn't mean we don't often get sucked in by them. So, here are nine sequels to keep an eye out for this year.

1. Avatar: Fire and Ash

Two fictional, blue-skinned characters with intricate body designs stand in a forest setting, wearing detailed tribal attire

20th Century Studios

The third instalment of James Cameron's five-part movie franchise is on the horizon, and fans can expect to see a whole new side to Pandora. With the two previous movies reaping huge financial rewards, Avatar: Fire and Ash will likely continue that trend, as fans flock to see what's next for the Na'vi.

The film will see the main cast return, including Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, and Sigourney Weaver, among other notable names. If you're wanting to rewatch the first two, you have plenty of time, because the release is set to be in December of this year.

2. Captain America: Brave New World

Person in futuristic suit with armor and sunglasses, standing indoors with a textured ceiling

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

After Chris Evans and Steve Rodgers' tenure as Captain America came to an end in Avengers: Endgame, it's been Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson who's taken on the shield. With his emergence in the TV show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this will be the first feature film with Sam as Captain America, and the new falcon, Joaquin Torres, will be there alongside him.

Fans can be excited to see the return of Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns from The Incredible Hulk, and the introduction of Harrison Ford as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. We can expect the release in February of this year.

3. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

A person with short hair and a focused expression looks slightly upward indoors, standing in front of a blurred background

Paramount Pictures

The second of the two-parter, after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and the eighth instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise, this Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt to pull off another impossible feat.

Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames all return for what many speculate will be the last film in the series, although that is yet to be confirmed. As it was filmed back-to-back with Dead Reckoning Part One, it also has Christopher McQuarrie at the directorial helm. Fans can expect to see the movie released in May.

4. Jurassic World Rebirth

Two people crouched among tall plants, appearing focused and alert. They seem to be observing something intently

Universal Pictures

With the somewhat tepid (to put it lightly) response to the third Jurassic Word film, this new instalment is looking to give the franchise a new look. A new look is exactly what they've got with the cast, as the initial trilogies' actors are out and a new cohort of characters are in, with the film also being set five years after the events of Jurassic World: Domination. They haven't held back on the new cast either, with Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey all playing prominent roles in the new movie. The release date is set for July.

5. Wicked: For Good

Two characters from a musical, one with green skin in a witch's hat and dark outfit, the other with light skin and long hair in a light dress, looking up

Universal Pictures

The songs from the first Wicked film will barely be out of your head by the time Wicked: For Good comes out, and we're all the better for it. The second part is expected to come out in November this year, and the story will continue where it left off, and essentially be the second act of the adapted broadway musical.

Thus, the cast will stay the same, although some suggest we may be seeing a more prominent role for Dorothy than the broadway versions. With the first film breaking records for a broadway adaptation, the second one will likely follow in its success.

6. 28 Years Later

Person outdoors in rugged clothing, aiming a longbow with a focused expression in a forest setting

Sony Pictures Releasing

23 years after the first film 28 Days Later, comes the third movie set in the apocalyptic world, as we see how certain survivors are living amongst the infected almost three decades after the Rage Virus escaped a research laboratory.

We will follow a group. of survivors as they leave their relatively safety of their inhabited island, and head to the mainland, uncovering an array of horrors, secrets, and mysteries as they do. The film reunites filmmakers  Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, both of whom worked on the first film, and stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O'Connell, amongst others. The release date is set for June.

7. Zootopia 2

Animated fox and rabbit at a DMV counter. The fox wears a green shirt and striped tie, exuding a sly expression. The rabbit looks inquisitive

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The underrated (in my opinion) buddy cop Disney film has its sequel coming out this year, where detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde have to go undercover to crack a confusing and mysterious case. Naturally, Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin return to voice Nick and Judy, with Ke Huy Quan and Fortune Feimster joining the cast as voice actors too. Fans can expect to see/hear Shakira reprising her role as the singer Gazelle, too. The release date is expected to be November.

8. M3GAN 2.0

A realistic doll with long hair, wearing a brown suit and striped tie, looking forward

Universal Pictures

The terrifying doll that took screens by storm in 2022 returns this year. After the box office and viral success of M3GAN, we can look forward to a continuation of the story from the same minds that brought us then first one. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw return to star with Gerard Johnstone as the director. Fans can await the release in June of this year.

9. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Two people in evening wear walking together outdoors at night, smiling warmly at each other

Universal Pictures

Nine years on from Bridget Jones's Baby, we dip back into the life of Bridget Jones, and in true Bridget Jones fashion, it isn't getting any simpler. Renée Zellweger returns as Bridget, alongside familiar faces including Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Isla Fisher. The movie will be released in February.
