Hundreds of flights have been delayed across the U.S. amid Thanksgiving holiday weekend winter storm concerns.

Bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snowfall are expected this weekend across large parts of the country, with National Weather Service forecasters warning that holiday travel could be impacted.

Regardless of the weather concerns, Thanksgiving travel is expected to be heavier than ever this year, with airports bracing for large crowds and AAA predicting that a record-breaking 80 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles this week. According to AAA, this increase marks a significant rise in holiday travel compared to previous years, as Americans resume traditional gatherings post-pandemic.

At least 506 flights were delayed and one flight was canceled between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware's "MiseryMap." A total of 3,602 U.S. flights had been delayed during the entire day at the time of publication, while 38 flights were canceled. These delays come as many airlines ramp up staffing to accommodate the surge in travelers, but some experts say the increased demand may still outpace available resources.
