Gardeners urged to put vinegar in garden now for 'four vital reasons'

Many of us want our gardens to look lovely in spring.

After all, there's nothing like bright, colourful blooms to jazz things up after the darkness of the winter months. But, according to a gardening expert, there's a simple task you should complete now to boost the chances of your garden thriving.

Ish, known as gardening.with.ish on TikTok, is known for sharing advice on social media, and his latest piece of wisdom may surprise you. He said you can get three "amazing benefits" from using white vinegar in the garden.

He said you can snap it up for as little as 35p and, let's be honest, it's something many people have at home. To make the solution, he takes a teaspoon of the vinegar and pops it into a bottle.

If you fill the bottle up with water, this will create a spray that's really handy for the garden. He said there are four reasons why it's so beneficial.

Ish said: "The first use is as a natural deterrent for things like cats, dogs and even rodents. They absolutely hate the smell of white vinegar and, when you water it down, you won't smell it, but they will.

"And, if you want to keep them off the lawn or your flowerbeds, just give a little spray and make an invisible border. They won't want to go anywhere near your flowerbeds.

"The next thing you can use this as is as an anti-fungal spray, and just a little bit on some of the leaves actually prevents any kind of fungal infection from spreading. But don't use too much - too much of this can actually do more harm than good for your plants."

While Ish points out it should always be used sparingly near plants, if you use it more liberally in areas, it can actually be used as a weed killer too. If you really spray them with the solution you could see them die off in a "matter of days".

As well as this, he noted it can also be used as a natural insect repellent as they don't like the smell either. If you spray it directly to the soil, he said this should make a difference.

The key to doing this right is making sure you water the solution down. Never just apply vinegar to your plants, as it can cause them harm if not diluted.

If done correctly, the hack is said to work wonders, and many people were keen to find out more. Over 1,000 people have viewed the video since it was shared.
