Gavin and Stacey officially bowed out after a thrilling final episode, but some eagle-eyed viewers were less than thrilled when they spotted a bizarre plot hole in the story
Gavin and Stacey: Nessa proposes to SmithyThe finale of Gavin and Stacey has left fans livid after spotting a major "blunder".
Over 12 million people gathered around their TVs to watch the final episode, which saw Nessa - played by Ruth Jones - and Smithy - played by James Corden - finally tie the knot. The show had been five years in the making and saw a wave of support from fans and fellow cast members.
But as the show was progressing, some eagle-eyed viewers spotted a rather obvious mistake in the final show's storyline. Left bewildered and confused, some fans flocked to social media to fume at the show for the hilarious cock-up.
BBC viewers had been in the grips of the story as Essex lad Smithy stopped Nessa as she was about to depart Southampton for a six-month stint on the high seas. In the touching moment, Smithy got down on one knee to propose to Nessa - after he left his girlfriend Sonia at the altar to chase Nessa down.
In the next scene, Smithy and Nessa stand in front of their nearest and dearest to say their "I dos", but some viewers were left confused when Smithy revealed his full name during the ceremony. In the touching scene, Smithy reveals his full name was Neil Noel Edmund Smith.
But one fan rushed to social media to point out the obvious plot hole. "I noticed that Smithy's full name at his wedding was revealed to be Neil Noel Edmund Smith," the user posted.
"But that's supposed to be Neil, the Baby's name (named after Noel from Hear'Say and Smithy's grandad Edmund)," they added. "Not criticising Ruth & James for what is an incredibly minor nit pick, more a realisation that I probably watch the show too much."
It turned out that other users had also spotted the mix-up during the climax of the show, with one frustrated viewer adding: "I noticed that too; my head explanation was that he changed his name to match Neil The Baby because I'd rather not just have a dumb plot hole."
A second account chimed in: "That is a pretty big oversight to be fair - well spotted." Whilst a third penned their take on the incident: "But the tradition in Smithy’s family is the son is named Neil too - so potentially Smithy could have the same names as his son."
The final episode caused heaps of commotion as fans demanded answers to questions that were raised during the 2019 Christmas special. In the 90-minute feature, the show dropped huge bombshells, including revealing that Nessa and Smithy had been interrupted shortly after she proposed to him.
Smithy left Nessa's proposal hanging when Gavin, played by Matthew Horne, came in at he wrong time. He would eventually go on to propose to Sonia - played by Lauren Aikman, his obnoxious and pernickety girlfriend, leaving Nessa heartbroken.
