Gavin and Stacey's Sonia reveals little known fact about wedding and fans can't believe it's true

Laura Aikman, who played Smithy's wife-to-be in the finale episode of Gavin & Stacey, was sworn to secrecy and even signed a non-disclosure agreement to keep her appearance a surprise

Gavin & Stacey star Laura Aikman has revealed a secret about the finale's wedding scene, after she managed to keep her part in the last episode a complete secret from everybody.

The finale episode of the beloved sitcom aired on Christmas Day, with fans horrified to see that James Corden 's character Smithy had been planning to marry Sonia. Smithy's almost bride-to-be made an appearance on the final episode, five years on from the cliffhanger that saw Nessa propose to him.

Fans had expected to see Smithy and Nessa's wedding in the final episode, but instead watched on as Smithy marched through John Lewis to find Sonia as his fiancée. Laura, who had to sign a non-disclosure agreement and was even put up in different hotels to the cast to avoid any accidental slip ups, has thanked make up and hair experts for their help. She revealed her hair was actually an incredibly realistic wig.

Writing on X, Laura wrote: "Little shoutout to @marcuswhitney1 & #AlisonWebb for finding and styling this amazing wig, YES THAT’S A WIG! As I couldn’t change my hair due to another job. Also for hiding with me and keeping me sane. #gavinandstaceythefinale #Gavinandstacey."

Gavin & Stacey fans heaped praise on Laura in the comments. One replied: "Thanks for adding such life to an instantly identifiable character and a great performance to a standout gem at Christmas. And for all the work to keep things under wraps (or a wig). Bravo!"

Another wrote: "Excellent acting. The air turned blue when you were show. Great not to have seen spoilers. Pure professionalism by all keeping that story hidden." A third fan added: "And a massive shoutout to you! What an incredible job of keeping it all so secret." Someone else agreed: "You did a brilliant job making us hate Sonia though I'm with her about the stripper."

Laura's character Sonia was kept so secret that even her parents were none the wiser - until they saw her on screen along with 12.5million other viewers. She revealed afterwards that she was kept away from the cast, even after filming, so they wouldn't have a clue she was to be one of the finale's main characters.

Laura filmed her family's reaction to see her on their screen, sharing the video on social media. Alongside the Instagram video, she wrote: "I take an NDA very seriously." Laura then added: "The moment my family realise Sonia is ruining Christmas again..." Her family were stunned by the reveal - and one could be heard gasping: "You never told me" - with Laura replying: "We never told anyone."
