The beloved BBC comedy had everyone perched on the edge of their sofas for the much-awaited finale. After a five-year hiatus, devotees were buzzing to see if Smithy (James Corden) would actually pop the question to Nessa Jenkins (Ruth Jones).
Despite being hit with a massive cliffhanger in 2019's special, it was clear from the get-go that Smithy had rejected Nessa's proposal at the beginning of the latest festive episode. Instead, Smithy found himself gearing up to march down the aisle with Sonia (Laura Aikman).
But as the tale unfolded and the big day loomed closer, signs were showing that old flames between Smithy and Nessa - who also share a sprog together - hadn't quite flickered out. When Smithy and Sonia's big moment arrived, it was Gavin Shipman (Matthew Horne) who dropped a bombshell interruption.
With a pal's confidence, Gavin nudged his best mate during the nuptials, questioning aloud whether Smithy really wanted to go through with marrying Sonia, which led Smithy to make a swift decision to drop the wedding. In an unexpected turn, fate saw Smithy and Nessa end up getting hitched, sending fans into a tizzy over their reunited love, reports Devon Live.
Hot off the heels of the epic scenes, chuffed fans took to X the app formerly known as Twitter to chuck in their two pence. One chuffed telly watcher exclaimed: "This ending is perfect!"
Another was over the moon, saying: "Gavin and Stacey may actually be the best show on television. not a single blunder in the whole show, good from start to finish, perfect finale. this is the most emotional I have ever felt."
A third chimed in with praise: "The perfect ending. Stories tied off perfectly. Characters where they should be. Plenty of humour. Overflowing with heart. And a handful of iconic lines and scenes."
A fourth fan raved: "For an hour and half the whole of Britain went on that journey. Shock, drama, tears and a happy ending. A staple of British heritage."
Meanwhile, another viewer confessed: "I literally just bawled my eyes out at that. the fact we'll never have another episode of this beautiful beautiful show saddens me but my God what a show it's been. The best eve."
