The San Francisco Giants are in search of an ace. While there aren't many of those left on the free agency market, it doesn't mean they can't trade for one.
Logan Webb is presumably the top pitcher in the Giants rotation as things stand now. After finishing 2024 with a record of 80-82, the team knows it has to improve the entire roster.
President of baseball operations Buster Posey made his first big splash by signing Willy Adames. Now, he could make his first big move on the trade market by acquiring Luis Castillo.
Castillo has three years of guaranteed control followed by a vesting option for 2028. The Mariners aren't necessarily looking to trade Castillo, but freeing up $24 million over the next three years could help them invest in some prolific hitters.
Here is what a potential trade could look like:
- Giants Acquire: SP Luis Castillo
- Mariners Acquire: OF James Tibbs III (Giants No. 2 prospect), RHP Mason Black (Giants No. 8 prospect) and OF Wade Meckler (Giants No. 15 prospect)
The only prospect the Giants will consider to be off the table is Bryce Eldridge, who is at the top of their farm system. Posey will have to give up a haul for a pitcher of Castillo's caliber.
Black struggled in his first taste of major league action at the end of 2024, but the Mariners have a knack for developing pitchers. Meckler would also give Seattle an outfielder who excels at getting on base.
It's going to be tough for the Giants to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in Posey's first season, but they can start to put pieces in place to build a winner.
