Glasgow's oldest artisan bakery opening first shop in more than 20 years

The oldest artisan bakery in Glasgow has announced that it will be opening up a new shop in the city.

On Thursday, Bavarian Bakehouse revealed that it will open a new location for the first time in more than 20 years. The bakery, which will be located on Hyndland Street in Glasgow's West End, is set to launch later this month.

The new venue is situated only a few doors down from the original Das Brot shop, which was a staple for locals in the 1990s and early 2000s — known especially for its Challah bread. Owner Kathleen McShane lives near the bakery.

She commented: "We’re excited to open a shop that allows us to engage directly with our customers again. While our products are already loved in cafes and restaurants across the city, having a physical storefront is something we’ve always dreamed of."

Bavarian Bakehouse bakes fresh and delivers each day to the West and Central belt of Scotland. It supplies many of the area's most popular venues, such as the Royal Troon Golf Club, Innis & Gunn, and Roots and Fruits.

The artisan bakery is renowned for its high-quality and handmade products, including sourdough, pretzels, cakes, and pastries. In particular, its sourdough starter is as old as the business itself — which was founded in 1984.

According to McShane, the new shop will both feature well-loved classics and act as a testing ground for new products. It will also serve up coffee from Thomsons’ Coffee, Glasgow’s oldest roaster.

The return to Hyndland Street is significant for the bakery, as it marks a return to its roots. Kathleen added: "This location is steeped in our history.

"The previous owners ran a very popular shop on the same road and now we’re back, part of a neighbourhood that values real, authentic food. From butchers and fishmongers to the farmers’ market, it’s an area that celebrates quality and tradition, which is exactly what we stand for.

"We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone and becoming part of their daily lives, whether they’re stopping in for a coffee and pretzel or picking up fresh bread for their table. Our new shop will be a place for people to experience the warmth and care that goes into every product we make."

As reported by the Daily Record, Bavarian Bakehouse has previously catered for major international events. These include the Commonwealth Games, Ryder Cup, and The Open Golf Championship.

The bakery's artisan rolls and pastries have also earned acclaim from celebrities such as Noel Gallagher and the Foo Fighters. The former reportedly called their sourdough rolls at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards at Kelvingrove the best he’d ever tasted.
