Robson Green, centre, talks about Grantchester's success in the US.

Actor Robson Green has opened up about how Grantchester is taking the US by storm - saying how he was greeted with wild scenes on recent trip to the States which was like a "Taylor Swift concert".

Ahead of the ninth series, he says how he was mobbed by fans in Las Vegas last summer - saying how they went “bonkers”.

He said: “Rishi (Nair) and I went to a press launch of Grantchester in Las Vegas last summer and were expecting about 100 people tops, but about 2,000 super fans turned up. It was like being at a Taylor Swift concert…it was so surreal.”

Robson said he loved getting to know the US fans, who watch the show on Masterpiece on PBS in the US. It’s on ITV in the UK. He says: “We spent a lot of time talking to them. It really reinforced the love and joy and happiness I have for this show, because it just transcends so many barriers and has so many universal themes. And the fact that it’s loved around the world and in Las Vegas fills my heart with joy.”

After being on the show for a decade, he also says he has no plans to leave - despite lead actor Tom Brittney confirming that this series will be his last. Tom, who has played much-loved character, Reverend Will Davenport, since 2019 is stepping back from his role to focus on new projects. Nair is playing the new vicar, Alphy Kottaram.
Asked if he ever got “itchy feet” to move on too, Robson says: “I never get itchy feet because I’m at a stage in my life where I want to work with people who make me genuinely happy, in front of the lens and behind it. I’m not chasing awards. I’m not chasing fame. I’m just being present in a very enjoyable and healthy environment, and that’s what Grantchester is. It’s one of the nicest jobs I have ever done in my career.”

And Robson said it was very upsetting seeing Tom leave the show.
He said: “It was really, genuinely upsetting to see Tom go, because we’ve been through so much together, both in front of the lens and behind it. And it’s the stuff behind the lens, before a take, that I’ll miss. And it’s just one word: laughter. And another one: joy. I miss the laughter and the shorthand that I had with Tom. For the creators of the show, [producer] Emma Kingsman-Lloyd and [writer] Daisy Coulam, who had been there from the start, like me, it was heartache. We were saying goodbye to something really special, a relationship that had developed over many years, but also an integral part and a really important part of the show.”

Grantchester returns on 8th January at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX
