HBO anthology series “It’s Florida, Man” wants your craziest FL-centric stories for Season 2.
IndieWire can announce that the irreverent late-night comedy is launching an official call for submissions to bring IRL tales to the screen.
“It’s Florida, Man” hails from the team behind “Eastbound and Down” and fellow HBO series “The Righteous Gemstones.” Bryan Storkel is the showrunner and executive producer, with director/EP Jeff Tomsic and producer Clark Filio.
“We are calling all Floridians to submit their stories. We are looking for any and all crazy and unbelievable TRUE stories that take place in Florida,” the announcement reads. “If your story looks interesting, we will get in touch to learn more.”
Shooting begins in April 2025.
Season 1 had Anna Faris, Jake Johnson, Sam Richardson, Jon Gries, Juliette Lewis, Ego Nwodin, Randall Park, Bobby Lee, Simon Rex, and more stars.
The unhinged tales couldn’t all fit into just one season — or even two. Director Tomsic previously told IndieWire that he created a “mile-long” spreadsheet of all the possible “fascinating, banana-shit” Florida stories to include in the series.
“The story selection process was quite long because we wanted people and stories that made you first think, ‘This person is insane!’” Tomsic said. “But by the end, maybe made you think, ‘Maybe I’m the insane one. Maybe this person — this witch, this mermaid or this man who had an arm bitten off— maybe they’re not crazy. Maybe they’re the ones who have it all figured out.’ I really hope we are lucky enough to do a Season 2 so we can share more.”
Well Jeff, you got your wish — now get us those goods.
“It’s Florida, Man” is from Rough House Pictures and Range Studios, bringing to life unbelievable ripped-from-the-headlines tales of the Sunshine State — straight from the people who live there. The show features interviews from everyday Floridians alongside re-creations starring a rotating cast of actors and comedians.
Executive producer Filio now tells IndieWire that the team hopes to receive at least “thousands” of stories to possibly have in Season 2. The show is looking for anecdotes that embody just how wild Florida is.
“The ideal Florida story is the kind of story you hear and then tell everyone you know the next time you see them,” Filio said. “It has some element that connects it to Florida’s reputation for the bizarre and unbelievable. And it has an element of danger of course. And then it should have a twist or a crescendo, and then land on something warm and heartfelt. It’s a tall order!”
The first season sourced material from posts on Craigslist, newspaper ads, flyers, and word of mouth, per Filio. He cited that it was a “much different approach” to how they are trying to cast for Season 2, in part because the show hadn’t premiered yet.
Director Tomsic agreed, saying, “It’s not so much stories from last season as landscapes. There’s an entire universe of untold stories in Florida that you just don’t get in the stupid headlines you read online. The majority of that “Florida Man” content is just cheap clickbait—mean-spirited and reductive. Florida itself is much richer. It’s a state unlike any other, almost as if all fifty states were smashed together — plus a few altered states crammed in, too. It’s a breathtaking and terrifying place. Part jungle, part swamp, part city — with dozens of animals that can kill you, from alligators to panthers to venomous snakes. And its human population is just as wild — diverse, beautiful, and, sometimes, just as dangerous.”
And for those Floridians who want to be featured in “It’s Florida, Man” Season 2, Tomsic has this advice: “The first thing I look for in these stories is our hero. That’s what this show is about to me: unlikely heroes – great characters who live big and take the road less traveled. To me, Florida is almost a mythical place – filled with cowboys, outlaws, rebels, and adventurers. These people could be your neighbor, your uncle, or someone you pass on the street without realizing the incredible story they carry.”
