The Hills' Heidi Montag broke down has she shared the devastating impact of the Los Angeles wildifre.

The reality TV star revealed her home was completely destroyed after a massive 1,200-acre brush fire broke out in the Palisades neighbourhood on Tuesday morning. She was able to evacuate with husband Spencer Pratt and their two sons earlier in the day, yet the family have lost "everything".

In a new update, Heidi admitted she became "overwhelmed" with the situation as she attempted to grab basic essentials for her family. Heidi tried to hold back her tears as she admitted it was a "blessing" she was able to take anything from her home. She is struggling to come to terms with the loss of their property, yet insisted she is thankful her family is safe.

"Craziest thing when you're packing for a fire is that your brain just freaks out, like 'what do I need? What do I not need?' and it's so overwhelming," she said. "Packing up the house, I mean I only have two pairs of jeans, two shirts, I've got so much more clothes for the kids, but why didn't I grab more."

Heidi added: "Thankfully I grabbed anything, which is a blessing, and the main thing is that we're safe and got out, but oh my gosh it's really like panic and then a part of you wants to leave stuff, and like 'I'm coming back! Of course I'm coming back!' So just praying for everyone else who's going through this, and all my friends and loved ones, and just thank god we have our health and our children.

"I know that and that's just trying to focus on the gratitude. It just kind of comes in waves, it's a lot." Husband Spencer had shared a video on his Instagram Stories showing fire officials attempting to control the blaze by dropping water from above onto the nearby mountainside.

However, Heidi had to share the devastating news the fire had ripped through their home. Taking to Snapchat, she was comforted by youngest son Ryker, two, as she sobbed: "I have no words... I'm so thankful that we're safe. I'm so sad our house is gone. I wish I could have gone back and got more. I didn't think it would be the last time we would be in our house. I'm so sad for everyone else going through the same thing."

She continued: "It's really hard losing your house and everything you worked so hard for. Life is so crazy." As the tears continued, Heidi admitted she wished she had been able to pack away her son Gunner's artwork prior to evacuating. Five people have been sadly confirmed to have lost their lives in the blaze according to officials.

It's reported over 1,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 70,000 people evacuated. One of the areas hardest hit is the Pacific Palisades, an affluent Los Angeles neighbourhood that is the home to many high profile A-listers, including Mandy Moore, Paris Hilton, Anthony Hopkins and Jamie Lee Curtis, all of whom have lost their homes in the unfolding carnage.
