Hilary Duff and her husband, Matthew Koma, totally nailed Halloween this year, turning heads with their hilarious costumes!
Matthew took on the role of Hilary’s ex, Joel Madden, while Hilary rocked the look of Joel’s twin brother, Benji Madden. They sported their ‘90s rockstar personas while out to dinner with none other than Joel and his wife, Nicole Richie.
Hilary channeled Benji perfectly in a black cap, layered chains, and a leather vest, while Matthew embodied Joel in a leather jacket, chain necklace, and MDDN hat—both topping it off with matching sunglasses for the ultimate throwback vibe. Hilary and Matthew share three daughters — Banks (6), Mae (3), and newborn Townes, born in May — along with Luca, Hilary’s son with her ex-husband Mike Comrie.
Matthew shared their amazing costumes on his Instagram Story on October 30, tagging Joel, Benji, and Nicole to complete the Halloween fun.
Nicole, 43, who’s been married to Joel, 45, since 2010, seemed to be a fan of their creative get-ups! Back in 2023, on Watch What Happens Live, Hilary shared that she has “a good relationship with” Nicole’s “whole family,” adding: “We’re neighbors. And we actually hang out all the time. I was just in her driveway honking for her to come drink wine with us the other day!”
Hilary even revealed another funny prank Matthew played on Joel. “Right when they moved in, for some reason, Matt photoshopped a picture of Joel and Benji in a photo with me on Valentine’s Day,” she laughed. “‘Happy Valentine’s Day, honey!’”
The How I Met Your Father star explained that over time, they’ve all come to understand “Matt is a big troll and likes to have lots of fun.”
This isn’t the first time Matthew has poked fun at Hilary’s friendship with her ex and Joel’s wife. Hilary dated the Good Charlotte band member from 2005 to 2006 while they worked on her Most Wanted album. Joel went on to find love with Nicole, whom he married in 2010.
“Every girl I’ve ever dated I have respect for, and I always try to leave them on good terms,” Joel said during a 2007 interview with People. “I don’t see the necessity to be friends with anyone you’ve dated but definitely out of respect of the time, you have to be kind of respectful and that’s what I try to do.”
At the time, Joel addressed the controversy around the nine-year age gap between him and Duff as well, adding, “People can say or think whatever they want … so in my reality, it’s kind of irrelevant. I’m always the kind of person that does the right thing and keeps my side of the street clean.”
