GOT7 is one of the most popular 3rd Gen K-pop groups! The 7-member band includes members Jay B, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam and Yugyeom, whose known for hits such as “Just Right” and “Lullaby.” So, how old are they now since their 2014 debut? The boy band originally debuted under JYP Entertainment with lead single “Girls Girls Girls” in 2014, and went on to release five studio albums under the large K-pop company. However, after their seven-year contract expired in 2021, the boys all decided to leave JYP to focus on their solo careers with other labels.
“We were signed under a label,” Jackson explained of their past with JYP during a 2022 interview with GQ. “We’d respect their decisions as much as they respected ours, but every comeback involved the company team, marketing, A&R, JYP himself (founder, Park Jinyoung), and the seven of us. It was a huge conversation where everything was just flying around.”
“The offer wasn’t bad,” Jay B said of JYP’s offer once their contract went up, “but our way and JYP’s way, it was just different. The way they looked at our solo promotions was different. I understand because JYP is a big company but, for me, I wanted more of a role in my work. I’m not trying to be a superstar, I just wanted to be me.”
In 2021, the members of GOT7 made their return under Warner Music Korea and released their self-titled EP with lead single “NANANA.”
“We’ve been planning to do this [album] ever since we left JYP Entertainment. It was supposed to be the end of last year, but it’s kinda difficult to get all seven members’ schedules aligned,” Mark told the outlet.
Now, as solo artists signed under different music labels, Youngjae says the “the members get along even better now.”
“Everyone here is the main character of their own life and story,” he explained “The members are all people who could have shone a lot brighter but we just didn’t have that opportunity. When performing as soloists, they do.” It leaves GOT7, he thinks, able to “come together as a group that’s the focus for our fans.”
