Most hydrangeas are winter-hardy, but to create the best conditions for the beautiful flowers, it is important to follow the correct steps for winter care by this weekend.

Hydrangeas are extremely popular thanks to their large, beautiful blooms, which last from late spring into the autumn.

With the arrival of winter this weekend, there is one task gardeners claim is “essential” to follow to ensure the shrub “blooms bigger next spring” with “flowers that can last up to 20 growing seasons”.

Gardening pros have stressed the importance of watering hydrangeas before winter.

Hydrangea retailers at Hydrangea.com warned that the cold and dry weather can be hard on hydrangeas during the winter months.

They said: “Since hydrangeas are water-loving shrubs, it's essential to give them one last thorough and deep watering before the ground freezes.

“When hydrangeas receive a deep watering before winter, their roots can hold on to moisture that will carry them through spring.”

The experts at Soto Gardens echoed this, claiming that “every hydrangea type loves water”.

They instructed: “Make sure they are well hydrated throughout the year, including the autumn and winter. Big long drinks are best when watering hydrangeas.”

Filling up watering cans with rainwater to water plants

Those at plant retailer Monrovia advised the same, highlighting that it’s “vital to water hydrangeas deeply and consistently as they are thirsty plants by nature”.

They said: “Cool, drying winter winds suck the moisture right out of the plants – and hydrangeas don’t use lip balm. Doesn’t have to be hot to be dry.

“In areas where a freeze is not an issue, water deeply but infrequently even throughout the winter. This depends on the amount of rainfall you receive.”

To water hydrangeas at this time, make a small hole in the side of a five-gallon bucket and fill it with water.

Then set at the base of the plant, allowing the water to trickle out slowly.

Another way is to turn on your hose to a slow trickle. Then place at the base of the plant for an hour or so.
