'I Hate It Here': Taylor Swift Spotify Streams Surge Following Trump Win

2 months ago 2

Taylor Swift's streams on Spotify have surged in the wake of the 2024 presidential election result.

On November 6, Donald Trump was elected as the 47th president of the United States, beating Kamala Harris, with the vice president on course to have the worst Electoral College result for a Democratic nominee since 1988.

Since Election Day, Swift, who was the biggest artist in the world last year according to Spotify and endorsed Harris in September, has seen daily streams for songs from her back catalogue increase sharply.

On X, formerly Twitter, the account Spotify Swiftie shared multiple updates each day about how many streams Swift has received on various songs and albums, and shared insight into listening trends of Swift's music in the days after the election.

Specifically, some of Swift's most political tracks saw a boost in streams.

"Only The Young," which featured in Swift's 2020 documentary, Miss Americana, "once again earned its best day on Spotify in over 2.5 YEARS following the US Presidential election with 257,031 streams" on November 6, according to the account, a near 160 percent increase in streams on the previous day. Spotify Swiftie reported that the song's last peak was in May 2022, after the presidential election in the Philippines.

Swift spoke candidly and in depth for the first time about her political views in the documentary.

Swift wrote "Only The Young" following the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, and it is considered by many fans and music writers to be a political anthem. It includes the lyrics: "Don't say you're too tired to fight, it's just a matter of time (can run), up there's the finish line, so run, and run, and run."

""The Man" by Taylor Swift was up 10.62% on Spotify yesterday with 613,371 streams following the US election — its best day in over 10 weeks," the X account reported the day after Election Day. "The Man," from her 2019 album Lover is considered to be one of Swift's most ostensibly feminist song. It includes the lyrics, "I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man," and was used by Harris in her presidential campaign.

Similarly, Swift's 2020 song "Mad Woman" from her album Folklore saw a boost in streams, according to the account. The song, which Swift alluded to being about female rage in the 2020 film Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions had its best day on Spotify in more than three months on November 6, with 148,359 streams, rising by around 24 percent on the day before, according to Spotify Swiftie.

Additionally, songs of Swift's which are not explicitly political also saw a boost in streaming, as was the case with two songs from Swift's most recent albums, The Tortured Poets Department and The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.

Spotify Swiftie reported that, ""The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" by Taylor Swift was up 19.14% in Spotify streams yesterday following Donald Trump's win in the US Presidential election, with 524,159 streams," as was, ""I Hate It Here" by Taylor Swift was up 36.22% in Spotify streams yesterday following the outcome of the US Presidential election, with 282,904 streams."

Newsweek has reached out to Spotify Swiftie, Spotify, and a representative of Swift for comment.

Swift endorsed Harris in the 2024 election via a post on her Instagram following the debate between the vice president and Trump on September 10. "I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election," she wrote.

The popstar said that Harris "fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos."

She also praised Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, saying he "has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman's right to her own body for decades."

In response, Trump posted "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" on Truth Social in capital letters.
